Acclimatisation
Timber is a natural (hydroscopic) material. For this reason, solid timber floors may need to be acclimatised to their new local environment before installation (up to 2 weeks). In the home, various conditions such as heaters, air conditioning or direct sunlight through windows can affect the moisture content of the floor.
Tait Flooring conduct moisture content test and take humidity and temperature records prior to departure and a common sense appraisal of the work site should be undertaken to ensure your site conditions are suitable.
Flooring delivery and carry in service
To maintain the moisture and physical properties of timber flooring it is vital that the flooring is stored inside the building prior to installation. Obviously the site must be in “lock up” condition that is weatherproof. Tait Flooring offers a carry in service for flooring products. Tait does not take responsibility for any damage caused to site materials during delivery. We request you take steps to protect other materials on site such as door jambs, plaster, etc as long lengths of flooring are often difficult to manoeuvre into rooms. A weatherproof garage is a preferred storage option.
The following conditions must be met:
- In the interest of our delivery personnel’s health and safety upon entering the site it is the builders legal liability to provide a safe environment
- Access on the site must be clear and safe
- Site must be OHS compliant
- No delivery by temporary steps, ladders or unregistered planking
- Delivery to ground floor only – no upper storey
- Must be a platform floor (Slab or panel floor) – no floor joists only
- Delivery to one room only with clear uninterrupted access
- No sorting into lengths
- If windows allow sun to fall on stored flooring then windows must be covered with a light proof covering. – Plastic sheeting or similar
Please contact the flooring showroom for any further technical information on timber flooring products.
Tait solid timber flooring – no returns policy
Tait Flooring have great pride in offering you flooring products that are accurately machined, graded and have the right moisture content range for trouble free installations. Before delivery each pack is tested for moisture content and records are also taken of temperature and humidity at time of dispatch.
To maintain quality control of flooring products Tait Flooring cannot accept any flooring returns which is clearly stated on all flooring quotes and delivery dockets. As you can understand due to the variable site climatic conditions (humidity and temperature) we are unable to resell returned material. There are a number of other factors that can affect quality aspects of flooring, such as:
- Flooring can be soiled by site dust e.g. - plaster dust
- Physical damage to boards on site – dropped materials and/or equipment
- Staining from water, oils and other wet chemical mixes
- Site docked boards that removes the “end matched” profile
- Boards with glue on the back face
Tait recommend that you reduce your exposure to waste by accurately measure flooring and make minimal allowances for wastage. These days all our solid wood flooring products are end matched which minimises wastage. You can always order additional flooring material more accurately at the final phase of the installation.
If you do have any quality issues related to your flooring purchase it will be obvious as soon as it is delivered and we request that you contact our flooring department immediately so we can deal with the matter efficiently.
It should be noted that wood is a natural material and is not graded for colour or colour variation and has no grounds for returns.
Timber flooring care and Maintenance
- Protective felt pads on furniture legs & accessories.
- Doormats to all entryways.
- Dry sweep with a static broom mop or vacuum the floor regularly.
- Occasionally use a damp well-wrung mop and a pH neutral timber floor cleaner.
- Avoid sharp or pointed objects coming into contact with the floor.
- Take care when moving appliances or heavy furniture. Place them on a sturdy mat or upturned carpet piece and slide them into position.
- When cleaning do not use abrasive brushes, steel wool, soap detergent or ammonia-based cleaners as these will damage the floor surface.
